BARN STYLES AND BUILDINGS

Raised Center Aisle Barn (RCA)

This is the most popular style and for good reason. The RCA has the traditional look of a southern barn with a lower and upper section divided by the RCA trusses. The RCA optimizes the light into the interior of the barn as well as providing a cross circulation. RCA windows are available for colder areas of the state.  The center aisle is either 12 or 16 feet and generally, breezeway doors are placed at both ends of the aisle. While the standard pitch is 2:12, most of the barns which I have sold are 3:12 or 4: 12. This allows for plenty of air circulation. The standard stall size is 12 x 12 feet but 12 x 16 feet and 12 x 24 feet are also available. The options for the stall doors and the exterior walls of the stall are listed at the end of the description of the barn styles.

End porches are very popular because they add to the ambiance of the barn and provide an excellent work place for the Farrier.  Dual aisle barns in either the RCA or the gable breezeway are available for larger operations.

                                             Gable Breezeway Barn

The gable breezeway barn with the single roof line is practical and cost effective. Although, the gable may lack the cross ventilation and the light in the barn, I design my gable breezeway barns to compensate for these features. I include shutters in both gables as well as placing a section of panel “lite” in the upper section of the exterior walls. As above the gable breezeway barn is offered with a range of roof pitches of 2:12 to 6: 12 as well as breezeway doors at each end of the barn and optional end porches. Some larger barns are designed with a center entrance using a 12 x 12 gable style side porch.

The In-Line or Shed Row Barn

The Shed Row style barn is an excellent choice for the moderate climate in the Carolinas and offers great versatility in design. The shed row can be a straight line, L-shaped or even U shaped. The front overhangs are 2, 10 and 14 feet with the two latter being the most popular. It is very easy to tailor the in-line style to exactly the number of stalls, feed room, tack room, wash/groom areas and so on. The in-line style can also be designed as a back-to-back and as in the traditional racetrack style the wall height can be raised to provide an exercise area under the overhang.

OTHER BLUE RIBBON MANUFACTURING BUILDINGS

CLEAR SPAN BUILDINGS: The range of width is from 20 feet to 60 feet. The smaller buildings are excellent storage buildings and workshops. These can be designed to have sliding doors at the end or roll-up/sectional type overhead doors at the sides. These buildings offer all the outstanding qualities of the BRM barns.

The larger, 60 feet wide buildings are excellent cover for round pens.

IN-LINE STYLE STORAGE BUILDINGS: The in-line style of storage building can be reconfigured to make excellent storage buildings for modest sized facilities. Divider walls can used to separate hay, bedding, as well as farm equipment. Overhead doors are conveniently used to close the front of each section.

PASTURE RUN-IN SHEDS: the most common size is 12 x 24 feet with an open front. However, variations with larger size and divider walls also work well.

COVERED CORRALS: these work well in the mild climate of the Carolinas. They allow for extra shelter in the heat of summer and the cold of winter. On my farm, the central section of the corral is covered (24 feet long x 36 feet wide, including the 12 feet aisle). The corrals give each horse a 12 x 24 feet run. The covered corral can be designed to cover the entire corral.

MARE MOTELS: These are an economic way to provide shelter for horses which also works well in this climate. The walls are primarily made of the panels with horizontal rails above solid lower section. They are therefore excellent for mares with foals ensuring protection of the foals from possessive and protective neighbors.

ROUND PENS: Round pens are from 40 to 60 feet in diameter. There are at least three versions: I. Solid wall “bull” pen; ii. Solid lower wall “lounging ring” and iii. the corral style round pen.  Overall, the lounging ring with the lower solid wall is the most popular.

BRM also have octagonal cover for their round pens.
